Oral non-Rx acne treatment?
I'm in college and still have severe acne issues. Topical treatments don't work at all, and my skin is too sensitive to use products that contain benzoyl peroxide (it burns to the point where I can't stand it and HAVE to wash it off).
I've been on amoxycillin for the past 2 years (1 pill, 2x a day) and it worked fabulous, however I now have pretty much no immune system and can no longer be on antibiotics for acne. I am currently on Differin gel, but as it is topical it is not doing much.
My question is if there are any non-prescription pills for acne that I could take. I am taking Biotin and Vitamin E pills as I've heard it helps with skin but I'm not seeing much if any difference. Are there any non-antibiotic pills or shots I could suggest to my dermatologist when I go back in to see him in November?
My skin and hair are also very oily, and skin is very sensitive which I'm sure doesn't help the situation.

Get some Proactiv. It really does work! A bit expensive, but well worth it. It's the best thing ever!
I don't know of anyone who has been on a simple antibiotic like amoxycillin for acne. That's kinda a strange solution to a problem, especially since like you said you now have NO immune system since you've been taking such a large dose of a common antibiotic that is normally used for real infections. I don't know who you are seeing for your dermatologist, but in all my years of living in South Florida and all the people I've known with acne probs (including myself at times), I've NEVER heard that solution. No WONDER you have no immune system!
I don't know of ANYONE who has taken an antibiotic for an acne problem. Antibiotics are for infections, and if you have a skin INFECTION, then that is not what I consider acne. Acne, according to my personal knowledge of the condition, is a skin CONDITION that needs to be CONTROLLED. Antibiotics are to cure. I could be wrong here, but that's my opinion.
Anyways, I have never heard of anything over-the-counter that can cure acne. And, if you are seeing a DECENT dematologist, you should not, as a patient, have to "suggest" anything to him. He should be able to correctly diagnose your condition and give you either a prescription cure, specially for someone who has such oily, sensative skin as you say you do, and take responsibility for the reactions that his patients have on such prescriptions…. OR give you suggestions for what to do to take care of your type of particular skin with over the counter stuff. No offense, but for a dermo doc to prescribe a simple antibiotic like Amoxycyllin for acne is the strangest RX I've ever heard of for such a condition.
Talk to your dermo doc. If he doesn't give you any feedback, then I would find another dermotologist. Good luck.
Hi
This easy, effective method uses one kitchen-cupboard herbal ingredient, and calls upon the power of a warm compress to open pores and allow the healing benefits of the herb to work on blemished skin. The compress method is more comforting and quicker to use than a facial steam, but is every bit as effective.
SIMPLE SOLUTION: Here are the simple how-to instructions to help clear troubled skin:
INGREDIENTS
1 quart water
1/2 to 1 cup dried thyme leaves (for a VERY strong infusion)
1. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Remove it from the heat and add the thyme. Cover the pan and steep the mixture for 20 minutes, then strain out the herbs and discard them. Let the infusion cool to warm. (You should be able to put your hand in the infusion and keep it there for several minutes without discomfort.)
2. Soak a clean washcloth with the infusion and wring the excess from it. With your eyes closed, place the washcloth on your face for 15 minutes. Remove the washcloth from your face and apply an astringent.
go to the web site below and do a search for acne articles..theres a great one about acne and diet etc.
good luck
