simple acne question?
I have pretty light acne, so I rely on my guy friends, Sal and Ben (salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, that's what I call them) to help me out. I've been using a 10% Ben spot treatment which kinda helped get rid of the actual zits, but left dryness and red spots behind. I also have a Sal spot treatment which seems gentler, I like it more so far. My real question is, is it bad to use both together? Will salicylic acid leave less of a mark? and…..do they make vitamin E oil that is non-comedogenic?
P.S. – I have very sensitive skin

Start by trying to figure out what ingredients work best for your skin because clearing acne up is all trial and error. There are two main ingredients found in most over the counter acne products – benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. You want to become familiar with these two. The maximum amount of benzoyl peroxide is 10% and the max for salicylic acid is 2%.
You need 3 or 4 items:
1. Cleanser
2. Astringent/Toner (if you feel you need it)
3. Acne medicine
4. Moisturizer with sunscreen.
A good way to start is to try this every morning and night:
1. Clean your face with a cleanser. Make sure that anything you ever put on your skin says that it is non-comedogenic (won't clog your pores). You can get mild cleansers (like Cetaphil) or acne washes. Scrubs might be too irritating for your skin and cause zits to pop open. Until you figure out what acne fighting ingredient works best for you, it's probably best to stick with a cleanser and astringent that doesn't have acne medicine so that you don't irritate your skin by mixing products with two strong ingredients. Most acne products warn against it, although I've see a couple of products and kits that use that method lately (see below).
2. If you feel that the cleanser didn't completely clean your skin, you can use an astringent (aka toner). Its job is to make sure that your skin is clean since cleansers alone don't always do the job, but astringents can be very drying (try an alcohol-free one). You should probably only use this once a day to prevent over-drying but still have clean skin. There are lots of them now with salicylic acid too, but like I mentioned above, you should probably choose a regular one first.
3. Use acne medication. The most cost-effective salicylic acid one that's on the market now as far as I know is Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment. It's 2 oz. and has salicylic acid 2%. The most cost-effective benzoyl peroxide treatments are probably Clearasil or Neutrogena Acne Treatment Creams. They are 10% benzoyl peroxide.
4. After you apply the acne medicine, wait about 20 minutes for it to dry and settle in, and then use a non-comedogenic moisturizer with SPF 15 or so. Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15 is a good one. The reason for this is that any acne medicine will dry out your skin, plus make it sensitive to the sun.
- Another ingredient that's starting to show up in more OTC products is sulfur, so that's a third option. It's in Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque and Bye Bye Blemish Drying Lotion. Walgreens sells both. There are acne kits over the counter now (like Proactive but at stores) that might make the whole thing easier for you. There's also an acne product called Terminator that's 10% benzoyl peroxide and 1% salicylic acid that might also be an option for you. Or you can get prescription acne medicine like Retin-A or Differin from a dermatologist.
- Make sure you use a separate towel for your face and change your pillow case regularly so that nothing your face comes in contact with has any pore-clogging oils.
- Don't pick your zits so that they don't result in the area become infected and they don't leave scars. If one pops, clean it, then dab some acne medicine on it. Later, put some Vitamin E oil on it to help prevent it from leaving a scar. Good luck
You are weird.
more than likely yes, it will work, but it will less likely work more often when mixing it, but since you have sensitive skin it might…
use one in the morning and one at night to help it from drying out your skin.
what???? LOl
uh what?
Sal has always worked better for me besides pro activ which has Ben. But who knows pro activ might have both I never read the ingredients. It is not good to use two acne medications at one time though.
i have hear that stuff thins your skin if you use it too much. My sister actually started bleeding out of her pores… not a ton but just little specks.
i have very sensetive skin too..i have very light acne also. but i use proactive. they also have a sensitive formula for sensitive skin. the first time i used the reg. proative. i broke out in a rash cuz of the benzoyl peroxide. then i switched to the sensitive formula. then i went back to the reg. my face is cleared up now.
I don't think you should use both together cause you already said that Ben lift a mark, and you have pretty sensitive skin, so i won't put both because sometimes when you put to much it could really irritate skin. I hope i helped you.
I've been in that situation and there is really nothing you can do about it. There are things you can do to try to reduce the blemishes and get rid of acne/pimples temporarily but you will always be finding yourself cleaning your face or your body depending on where it's at.
I mean of course your acne should go away eventually but for some this is the case their whole life.
I'm 29 years old and have been suffering from these little pests since I was a teenager. I tried all sorts of face washes from the local grocery store and what not, but nothing seemed to work. If anything it would just make my skin dry and itchy.
Literally the best acne face wash I've ever used has been this stuff called clearpores. It has got rid of the acne to quickest and has been a success ever since I got it. It's unique cause of it's herbal supplement you take a long with it that helps your skin from the inside out. I saved money on it at skincleansingsystem.com at the time which was helpful.
You should really look into this stuff and if you can to assure the best results, get the 3 month supply because if it doesn't work it will still save you butt on the return policy.
Well good luck and best wishes.
